Hickory Small Animal Hospital would like to welcome our latest veterinarian, Dr. Amanda Pittman. Dr Pittman is a 2005 LSU School of Veterinary Medicine graduate. Her first 7 years were spent in a small animal practice in Knoxville, TN and she has been practicing emergency medicine on the Northshore since moving back to LA in the summer of 2012. Favorite interests are small animal ultrasound, cardiology, physical rehabilitation, and dermatology. Her main goal is to provide exceptional medicine in a compassionate manner while also getting to know each of her patients and their owners.

How to remove ticks from your pets:

1) Wear gloves
2) Grasp the tick very close to the skin with a pair of fine-tipped tweezers.
3) With a steady motion, pull the tick’s body away from the skin. Avoid crushing the tick to prevent infection.
4) After removal, clean your pet ’s skin with soap and warm water and dispose of the tick by placing it in alcohol or flushing it down the toilet.

Sentinel is back! Sentinel is a once a month heartworm preventative that also sterilizes female fleas. Novartis, the manufacture of Sentinel, has also dramatically discounted the price of Sentinel to regain the market share they lost due to the product shortage. Sentinel is now 25% cheaper and has a $10 rebate when you buy a six pack making it cheaper than Heartgard.

We will be adding an additional 615 square feet to the front of our
main hospital. The new construction will make the reception area bigger with the addition of two more computers and phones, more space for food inventory and a third exam room. The veterinarians and staff are excited about the added space and we should start construction in the next month.

Hickory Small Animal Hospital has added a oxygen cage to our ICU unit. This is a life saving service we can now offer for animals in respiratory distress.

We have a new flea medication for cats, Activyl. Activyl kills the adult, larval and eggs with a single, safe active ingredient. The active ingredient, indoxacard is highly toxic to insects (causes irreversible paralysis and death in the flea) but safe for mammals. This new product is a monthly topical product that kills 90% of fleas within 12 hrs of application and kills 100% of fleas in 8-12 hrs for a full month. We see this as a more potent, less expensive Frontline.
